Qualifying
#1

Wasn't sure where to put this- so feel free to move if there is a better place.

But I just came across this youtube vid and channel, was unaware of it before, some good stuff, though some bits may seem a bit basic to some of the more knowledgeable guys

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_boUOJXUYY

Some good stats and info, for those less well informed, and maybe gets me out of Gags, "Tool" shed, haha - for a previously, misjudged attempt at a bit of a laugh Smile

but reminded me of some great Quali sessions

I'm sure some of yous guys, will know some better, but that was great Germany 2005  Big Grin

Hahaha - if you listen properly though Forza, check out where he puts him? - It ain't No 1 - LOL, and when I seen it was actually surprised we don't have a dedicated Quali section, check the stats at the start again, I paused it to see where he was

but thought, we could all reminisce of some of the best Quali sessions ever - thought the 2005 German one was awesome Smile

haha

He's behind - Fangio - Clarke - Ascari and Senna, on pole "percentages" if I read that table right, LOL

See - even Foggy can see through you now Forza, I think it was that last poster you showed us that sealed your fate, dont worry 2021 will soon be here and Lewis will be your guy!

Loved the McLarens Foggy the looks, the noise, the cars just looked meaner to me than they do today but maybe I have had too much to drink!!!

I think I am over the engine change it is what it is the V6 is here to stay, my personal favourites were the V8 from what I know they were simple to make, cheap to build (in F1 everything is relevant or should that be irrelevant to real life) and offered a lot of possibilities.

Nice one Fog.    Thumbsup

Don't/wont believe the qualifying stats, not having any off it!!!!

For my eyes, Senna is the qualifying King & always will be.   Big Grin

The issue with including Fangio and Ascari amongst others in with the modern era drivers is that there were so many differences. I actually think it was Alonso that said the true measure of a good qualifier / single lap specialist was being able to get poles when not in the best or second best car. That however, is impossible to realistically calculate.

I maintain the best are Clarke and Senna with Hamilton sniffing around their. I'm not entirely sure where he'll rank by the end of his career. I have to say though that this current generation of drivers have had some seriously good single lap specialists, Hamilton and Vettel of course, but Rosberg, Alonso and Kimi all deserve a mention. Even Massa had his moments as did Button. I think it's a mark of how difficult on track passes have been for the past decade or so that many drivers have focused on their one lap pace.

You know my thoughts on Trulli already Fog. Just couldn't do it when other cars were on track. I had this discussion about his qualifying performances and we discovered that his best qualifying performances came in the "one shot" era, where only one car was allowed on the track at a time. This was an interesting format for a number of reasons, but it did mean that the aero was always going to be working at its peak, as there wasn't turbulent air coming off of other cars. Plus you didn't get a lot of time to "dial" into a track, so what this means is that Trulli was probably an expert at setting the car up more than anything else, and knew what his set up changes would mean on the track. He was always a very knowledgeable guy, and I remember Alonso saying he'd make one hell of a race engineer... and I think he's right.

Good points, as always, Jody, and never thought about that - I'm quite happy with the current Quali configuration as it is - but didn't remember, that at that time, it was just one car on track at the time, or the "one Shot" era as you put it

perhaps an interesting idea to go back to, though I'm sure there were probably downsides as well -

It was the main reason, after watching the Lewis vid, I thought "Qualifying" deserved it's own thread

And yeah, I also remember the "Trulli train" as it was known, maybe,  he more than anyone is responsible for DRS being introduced, LOL

but like you say, mighty at car setup, not a talent to be sniffed at Smile

Edit: Yeah - I don't see why not, that every driver should have "1" clear lap to themselves - isn't that kind of the point (essence) of quali?
