Nico Hulkenberg - PapaofGags - 19-08-2018

Nico Hulkenberg says he takes some pride in having "survived" for nearly a decade in Formula 1, despite the ever-growing threat posed by pay drivers.

The German, who once came close to a race seat with Ferrari, is highly regarded for his speed but has yet to take a podium in F1.

However, with Renault showing encouraging progress ahead of the arrival of Daniel Ricciardo in 2019, Hulkenberg has the best chance yet of getting that monkey off his back.

The Ferrari deal was real.

Hulkenberg came close to a breakthrough deal with Ferrari for 2014, as the Italian outfit weighed up a replacement for Felipe Massa.
But despite contracts having been drawn up, in the end Ferrari made a last-minute decision to sign Kimi Raikkonen as teammate to Fernando Alonso.
Looking back at that time, Hulkenberg admits that the Ferrari move had "seemed close" but says he does not waste time wondering what might have been.

“It seemed, you know, serious. It seemed close,” he said. “There were negotiations, there were contracts flowing about, being sent between lawyers, but it doesn't matter now.
"At the end it didn't happen, and yeah, the rest is history.”

I like Hulkenberg as a driver and believe he ís underestimated. Love to see him match up with Ricciardo and find out if he really is that good.

What does it mean for his future, if he proves to be faster cq. better than Ricciardo? Would he get a seat at Mercedes or Ferrari? I don't believe that, but then again, I don't know shit.

Renault expects Nico Hulkenberg to take a grid penalty during the remainder of the Formula 1 season after the energy store failure he suffered in Hungary.

Hulkenberg stopped on track at the Hungaroring during Friday practice and Renault had to revert to the energy store he started the season with for the rest of the weekend.

The team initially feared that the failure would trigger MGU-K and MGU-H problems as it damaged some wiring looms, but the energy recovery systems were unharmed.
However, Renault chassis technical director Nick Chester said the energy store will not be re-used this season and he does not expect Hulkenberg to complete the year with the used component re-fitted in Hungary.

Hulkenberg had moved onto his second energy store in Austria, along with teammate Carlos Sainz and both drivers at Renault customer McLaren.
He will need to use a third energy store, one more than allowed by the regulations, which means a five-place grid drop.
"I think probably most people are aware we were probably going to have to take a penalty at some point anyway on energy store," said Chester in Hungary.

"It's quite badly damaged. It had a short somewhere, so it's not like the cells have done something weird on their own."
Any driver who took an early energy store change, or has lost the use of it completely because it suffered a terminal failure, is under pressure to avoid future penalties.

Ain't that the truth!

The only likeable F1 driver to come out of Germany and he's dealt all the duff hands.

RE: Nico Hulkenberg - Monster Hesh - 22-08-2018

He's not going to the only one, more will follow.

Don't be too hasty there Fog, penalties can mean bigger points than usual for midfielders, due to overtake points. If he got a 10 place penalty personally he'd stay in my team.

So naughty step it is for Nico.

Nico Hulkenberg has been given a ten-place grid penalty for the next race, having caused the Turn 1 collision in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The German driver went into the back of Fernando Alonso, causing the Spaniard to fly over the back of the Sauber of Charles Leclerc at La Source.

The ruling from the stewards will mean that the Renault driver will drop ten places on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The stewards have also put three penalty points on Hulkenberg’s super-licence, after the incident, which was scarily similar to the 2012 start.
“The Stewards reviewed video evidence, heard from the driver of car 27 (Nico Hulkenberg) and the team representatives,.” the statement from the stewards read.
“The driver of car 27 stated that he completely misjudged the situation and freely admitted it was his mistake.
